liquid breakfast: green juice [i2]

The juice for breakfast thing, turns out, isn’t so bad.  I’ve been tinkering with the flavor and it is definitely best served over ice.  Also, I’m not particularly hungry until around 11ish (breakfast is 7:30am) – and I don’t have one of those “desk” jobs.  As a teacher, I’m movin’ about, getting things done, and teaching kids stuff.  I’m actually quite surprised I don’t get snappy with the kiddos.

That said, here is the second iteration of the green juice recipe:

- 1 head of romaine lettuce

- a handful of kale

- 2 lemons (although I’ve gotten some feedback that it’s too much, I like it tangy/tart)

- 1 inch of ginger, peeled

- 2 sweet apples (gala, those yellow ones, whatever. just something to sweeten it up)

Voila!

I’ve always sort of wanted to do a cleanse of some sort.  It just sounds so…renew-ing.  Blank slate.  Start over.  There is this company that delivers a 3-day (or 2 or 1) juice cleanse.  Their website was super snazzy (very convincing) and the juice was expensive (also very convincing).  Best of all, they delivered it to you.  Just considering it made me feel all hollywood, yoga-chic.  I even watched a video on colonics.

Anyway, clearly I don’t have the money to do any sort of home-delivery juice cleanse or extraneous medical-y procedures.  But, I did buy a juicer and the juice cleanse book!  My juicer arrived, and I’m in love.  The book is still on the way.  In the meantime, I decided to try a green lemonade recipe that a friend recommended when she was trying to ease into a raw diet.  I made it for breakfast this morning.

Recipe I used:

  • 1 head romaine lettuce
  • 4 pieces of kale
  • 2 whole lemons
  • 2 fuji apples

It wasn’t bad.  We put some ice in because, “green drinks just should never be warm.”  I think it could have been sweeter and maybe another lemon or a lime.  Some websites suggest ginger.  Maybe a kiwi?

buying gifts for the born-to-be [i2]

First come the weddings.  Then, inevitably, the babies.  Of course, there are a few unfortunates “oops-es” speckled in there, but no one has a registry for a divorce.

Anyway, this is nothing new to anyone in the 20ish to 30ish age range.  Therefore, I feel justified including gifting as it applies to weddings and babies as something that is a part of my life’s routine.  At least at this point in my life.

The first iteration of baby gift-giving from me came straight off the registry.  Easy, yet mostly unsatisfying.  Especially so if the couple has a lot of stuff, has generous grandparents-to-be, etc.  What’s a unique spirit like me to do?  (Sheep, you’re all sheep! Baaaaa!)

Well, nothing too labor-intensive, expensive, or crazy, of course.  But, the newest iteration on the baby gift for the girl who’s friends are poppin’ ‘em out with no foreseeable end in sight is…

In short, this company has taken popular artists’ music (in a variety of genres, but sorely lacking female representation) and turned them into synthesized lullabies.  And folks, they’ve just added Kayne.  Oh, yes.
